Op dit moment werkt dit alleen nog maar met het XMPP-protocol (Jabber en Google Talk), maar andere zullen in de nabije toekomst worden toegevoegd. De belangrijkste is een nieuwere versie van libpurple, die nu video en spraak mogelijk maakt. In deze release is een groot aantal veranderingen te vinden. Het opensourceprogramma wordt onder versie 2 van de gpl-licentie uitgebracht. Pidgin is beschikbaar voor Windows en Linux en is prima in Gnome 2 en KDE 3.1 te integreren. Tijdens de installatie kan uit maar liefst zeventig verschillende talen worden gekozen en kan spellingscontrole worden toegevoegd. Dit multiprotocol instantmessagingprogramma kan overweg met de netwerken van AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, irc, MSN, MySpaceIM, QQ, Silc, Simple, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo en Zephyr.
